Semester Project

I will be researching how women are viewed in the art world from the mid 1900s - present day. I will be looking into how the perception of women has changed over the years; What changed people's views and why? Why were women seen as inferior to men in the art world? I will also be discussing the Feminist Movement in art.

Can you name 5 women artists?

Your thesis choice

Concentrating on the artists and exhibitions you saw at the Brooklyn Museum, choose 5 women artists (they do not all need to be in the exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum but must include several from the galleries or be inspired by the exhibitions there) to illustrate and briefly explain various themes we have discussed throughout the course about gender, race, class and art history.

You can organize your post into genres, 'isms, political or societal messages, aesthetics, techniques or personal narratives. You must choose a clear thesis and the 5 artists carefully. Your post should include artists working today as well. Be sure to illustrate your post with various images (and/or videos) and to cite your research. Please reference the Brooklyn Museum and the exhibitions of the Sackler Center extensively.

Feel free to include or tie in the topic of your final assignment if appropriate. You can use this opportunity to dive into that research for this post if you can find overlap.

****Group trip to the Brooklyn Museum is Sunday, NOVEMBER 24th at 1pm

DO NOT BUY TICKETS!! Jakki Godfrey will be having us enter from a visitor's entrance. We will meet as a group in the main entrance lobby. Please find our group and we will wait for Jakki to take us in together.

*Several of us will be meeting in Jersey City at the Grove Street PATH station (to ride in together) at 11am if you are interested in riding together.

DIRECTIONS:

Please remember that the PATH train WILL NOT RUN TO WTC this weekend!!

You can take the 33rd Street PATH train to Christopher Street and walk to the subway 2/3 train at Seventh Avenue. Then take the 2/3 to Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum.

See a subway map. Make sure to check with the MTA for any service changes, especially on the weekend.

We will be receiving a tour of the conservation lab by Brooklyn Museum Conservator Jakki Godfrey. Please see her website at www.boro6artconservation.com

Please post a short description of where you are with your semester project. Be sure to explain the medium and exact output of your research. Your project is NOT a presentation, but instead you will present the project to the class in a presentation. in your post please list resources from your research on your topic. These include: inspiration (examples similar to what you would like to create) and the resources you have already that are informing your project.

Please be sure to address: Why are YOU making this project?Who is your audience? What is your message? How does this fit into your professional aspirations? How does this fit into your portfolio?

Explain the subject matter and medium the artist chose, its significance to the work and the time it was made. Explain the meaning and historical significance of the artist's work as well as lasting influence on contemporary artists. Please cite from the class readings and include at least 2 other sources (not wikipedia!) for your post.

Proposal Due for Semester Project

~One page - printed and handed in -explaining the topic you have chosen to focus on and research, the medium you hope to explore in creating your project (research paper, essay, video, art project etc. - see the project description on the syllabus.) Please be as specific as possible. Also include some research in a small bibliography, inspirational examples and other resources you plan to use.

**GROUP PRESENTATIONS must also have a summary posted to the blog. One post per group. Best to complete this before your presentation in class. For those who have presented please do this immediately. This post is part of your presentation grade.

What were the expected roles of women in Europe in the Middle Ages? How did roles for women change throughout the Renaissance and into the 19C? Please explain how these roles influenced the lives women artists and the subjects of their work. Using references to the readings and to discussions in class, please use examples through to the 19C to illustrate the challenges women artists faced. How did they overcome these or reference them in their work?

5-6 paragraphs. You must cite the readings and any other research you use for your writing. Please include at least one image and links to additional resources.

NOTE about your post EDIT!! Please go back and edit, format*, re-write if needed. These posts should be strong analyses of the readings, convey an understanding of the readings and cite them extensively. These should be carefully written and be well edited and properly cited with bibliographic information at the bottom of each post. All posts should include illustrative images (with captions) and links that are clear and introduced in your text.

*Please be sure that your published post is formatted correctly with spacing, alignment, paragraphs, images and captions of images lined up as best as can be. Fonts and images should be sized correctly. Please remember these are on the web - format for the web. What is the male gaze and why is it a pervasive in art and in popular culture? Give illustrative examples. What is the oppositional gaze and why (as described by bell hooks) has it developed?
