I intend to
create a video containing images, text, clips, and a reflective soundtrack
illustrating both the Femen Movement and the countermovement that opposites it.
According to its official website, Femen is a feminist movement that “is an
international women’s movement of brave topless female activists painted with
the slogans and crowned with flowers” (http://femen.org/).
Aimed towards young feminist and/or student activists, I want to try and demonstrate
both sides of the debate. I plan on
highlighting significant protests and the reactions received in result of those
protest both politically and socially.
I want to tackle the idea of cultural relativism, and the notion that western women must liberate nonwestern women. Through photos, posters, and art I set to analyze the Femen Movement's mission, and why that mission is so highly contested. Then, once that context is established I was to shift the video towards student reaction and reflection. By surveying students on and off the Rutgers- Newark campus on their impressions of the movement, I intend to capture the urgency or lack thereof in regards to the topic. I want to allow student to not only achieve a formative opinion of their own, but to reflect on it in a way that may them onto their own endeavors, or it may just upset people. As a political science and women’s and gender studies major, I want to be able to deconstruct Femen, though a political and gendered lens. And in the future, I want to work with individuals, activist groups, and organizations in a conservative and collaborative way. This project will contribute to the development of my commutative and interview skills, setting a based that will allow me to grow.

This post really caught my attention with all the naked women I immediately wanted to know what was going on. I like all of the pictures you used to get your point across of how women are not objects. I really like how you used regular people holding up different notes to get your point across I think it's unique because I don't think anyone else has done that.

ReplyDeleteI originally posted and then decided I didn't quite understand. Femen is new to me and I find a chance to learn about it interesting. I have done interviews in the past and lectured in my job. The best thing to do when interviewing is to have very clear and concise questions. Also, personal belief should be left out if possible. If you interview people who don't know about the movement your work could be skewed. I think if you could find people to give the information to and then interview them it would be for informed.
ReplyDeleteUntil now, I was not aware of a movement such as this. I am really interested in knowing about the movement as well as the responses on this movement generated by common people, especially students. I am really surprised and glad at the same time about your bold move on focusing more on the oppositional side of the movement rather than simply playing along with their ideals. I hope your project comes along well because what you have so far is a great start!
ReplyDeleteYou should look into the movie "Not without my daughter" it is a great movie where you see a low of women discrimination. This movement is very interested and needed. Keep up the good work and good luck !
ReplyDeleteThis post caught my attention immediately! I have plenty of friends that suffer from the traditional cycle of religion. Until now I had no clue that Femen existed and can not wait to learn more! This topic will contain a lot of information that many of us will remember forever. The videos that you have chosen are great and so are the photo illustrations, they really bring the viewer in and grabs the attention. I'm very excited to see the presentation in class
ReplyDeleteIts quite an intriguing project as the nude women catch the attention of almost anybody that is scrolling down the blog. There's another, not as large movement that you might want to check out, the name escapes me but it had something to do with women having the same right to be able to walk in public without their shirts, topless, similar to how men are able to.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you're playing Devil's Advocate when it comes to Femen. There are so many people that demonize Femen, while there are also people who say how empowering Femen is. It's important to highlight the dichotomy here as an example that feminism is not always geared towards every woman of every race, but is often times geared towards white women. Perhaps you can use this as an opportunity to point out how important intersectionality (http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/wiki/Intersectionality) is in feminism and how Femen, unfortunately, is not intersectional in any way. As for the movement that Kevin mentioned, it is called GoTopless! It's actually quite different from the Femen movement. You can find that here: GoTopless.org
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! It will be interesting to find out the reactions of Muslim women. I don't know if you know the student Alyssa Lawler who works in the Computer Lab in Bradley hall on the fourth floor- she did an interesting project of photographs based on Muslim women on campus and their head gear and also delved into their backgrounds etc. She did an entire semester's work based on Muslim women and their head piece- if you know her or run into her you should ask her about it and maybe collaborate with each other
ReplyDeleteAlyssa is blonde and wears thick black glasses
