I will be doing an essay with images that represent the recent unfortunate events in Egypt. I will be mainly focused on graffiti that represents the horrifying sexual assaults against women. These women were mostly raped in public by multiple men and had no justice served to them. These men went on saying that these women deserved what happened to them because they caused to themselves. Below is a link to an article by CNN where a few cases were shared and also the comments of men. Women used graffiti to represent their anger, and also men who disagreed with these horrible action helped.

It is sad to hear the Egypt is going through this horrible tragedy, when it comes to women. I think this will be a very emotional topic since it involves horrifying sexual assaults. I actually found an article that might help you more with the essay! http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2013/08/201381494941573782.html
ReplyDeleteThis is a horrifying topic and I wish you all the courage in the world! It's somewhat uplifting to see that not all is lost and I think it's great that you're giving these pro-woman artists the exposure they deserve. Publicity is power!

I think that if you elaborate on the topic not only inspect of recent events, but in a historic context in generally, you can really find some great street art depicting and challenging heinous acts against women in Egypt.
ReplyDeleteI believe this is a strong topic to talk upon on. There are a lot of women whom struggle receiving their right justice but it is made difficult because of their religious beliefs. Like the film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1277737/ It's based on a different setting but same idea.

I love your project idea, i suggest using the recent Egyptian revolution and the overthrowing of the ex-president Mubarak as a reference. You could talk about how specifically women were victimized during the heat of battle and how their lives were sacrificed in great numbers as a mere symptom of war.
