Semester Project Proposal Update

My semester project will consist of a research paper with illustrations that will help get my point across. My topic for said paper will be on how women are viewed, and the respect they lack, which affects the future generations of society. The Male gaze was something that peaked my interest when we read the aforementioned article and eventually led to me choosing a topic such as this, in where women aren't given the power and respect that they deserve. What I wish to accomplish is to educate the following generation of kids that will become young adults and eventually form families as well as impact people of my own generation to cause change within that traditional patriarchal mindset. If we as a society continue to tolerate the mass display of women being viewed as 'trophies', 'pieces of meat' and 'playthings' then what example are we setting for the next generation of leaders, politicians, teachers, and members of society? There's so much attention placed on degrading women, especially across all forms of social media that its sickening to scroll through Instagram feeds and religiously see the 'bitches be like...' meme, once again targeting women. Lupe Fiasco, a rapper, targets these issues in his song 'Bitch Bad (Lady Better)': "First he's relatin' the word 'Bitch' with his mama - comma And because shes relatin' to herself, his most important source of help And mental health, he may skew respect for dishonor". This here targets how mothers in our time are referring to themselves as bitches, unknowingly affecting the next generation, causing the child to grow up believing and understanding that its okay to degrade women and continue the long history of women being put down and never really giving them the respect that they deserve. I plan to create my project by diving into Chadwick and using many of the paintings that we have seen and discussed in class, borrowing some information from Guerrilla Girls as well, also using John Berger's article and incorporating some of Laura Mulvey's work from 'Visual pleasure and Narrative Cinema' and incorporate some images from social media, use artists such as Lupe Fiasco to really solidify my essay.

  1. I think that its really interesting that you are looking at all forms of media. Curiously on Huffington post there was just an article on Lilly Allen using bitch in a positive way to refer to Adele and other female artist, so you could look dive into why females use bitch to be positive about other females(did that make sense?).

  2. I agree with Erin you can even do an interview with women who utilize the word bitch daily among their friends and family.
