Semester Project Summary---Male gaze, body image, disorders.

Obsession for men, Calvin Klein Ad
For my semester project, I decided to put together a video on the male gaze and its effect on women in society. The male gaze depicts women as more of an object rather than human beings. Whether in films, magazines, advertisements, or commercials, women almost always appear to be revealing in some type of way. Women begin to view other women through male gaze as well.

There are young girls out there who feel like they have to look like those models displayed in order to be pretty. The girls feel like they do not look good enough. This is especially true for the overweight girls. They envy to have the body of the women in the ads and magazines. They go so far in order to achieve that body that they put their life in danger.

If they do not put that stress on themselves, they have bullies who do it for them. If a girl is overweight, she is made fun of. Thus, causing her to fall into depression. Depression then leads to body disorders because the girls are trying to fix the problem so the bullies can stop picking on them. The disorders range from anorexia, to bulimia, to body dysmorphic disorder.

My video serves the purpose of bringing awareness to young girls who are dealing with these disorders and letting them know that they are not alone. I even included a personal video of my struggles with body image.
