Artly is the product of
my desire to create an impactful public art space. The largest space available
that holds no limitations in location or funding is the internet, so it is a
magazine that lives online and is spread through my blog, twitter and tumblr.
The magazine is designed to bring art and cultural awareness to young adults
and art novices. Artly is designed to live as another tool in the public realm
that makes art more accessible to people.
The first issue is designed around the idea of curating an
exhibition. There are several themes revolving around one specific location,
India. The link between these artists is
that they all represent the female perspective. They illustrate gender based
issues, most often pulling from their personal narratives. Another key point is
that all the pieces highlighted have been produced within the past 8
years. Although some artists have been
working for decades the pieces that I have chosen are more contemporary.
Paired with information about the artist is cultural
information. This issue being specific to the female life in India I have
featured statistics relating to that. This anthropological input is designed to
spark a connection between the art and the place. The title of the issue, Heirs
of Rani, is also designed to reference a piece of Indian history. Rani being a
strong female warrior and leader pulls together the idea that despite the
sexism, misogyny and patriarchy present in their culture there can be females
who create an impact.
The magazine itself was created from scratch. Jilster offers
the media outlet, providing blank pages and the opportunity to order a hard
copy for distribution. Each page was handcrafted and designed for each individual
artist. Instead of keeping with one specific template the pages are created
with each artist in mind keeping them individuals connected through their
heritage and message.
Artly is designed to live beyond the classroom. Although
gathering information on several artists and cultures each month and condensing
it into 20 pages is challenging my goal is to find a formula that makes it
possible. Whether it is less artists and more content or more content and less design
of the pages, I hope to keep this continual. Artly’s aim is to inform the non- academic
in a fun, vibrant and nontraditional way, creating an impact in the public arena.
